A Brief Update

It has been a while since a blog post, until now.
This is just a brief update and also a review of the last couple of months.
A little while ago we uploaded a video called Ladu Playing With Toys which can be viewed here
We hope to upload some more videos soon.
A few months ago we also set up our own forum which can be viewed at http://www.trainingyourparrot.freeforums.org
Please sign up!
Also a bug where videos won't display on the videos page has been fixed.
We have also upgraded the subscribe page to a much better interface. Please sign up to get emails about various different parrot training methods.
We also hope to expand our app to more platforms such as iOS and Blackberry (you will hear more about this soon)

Flight Recall

You Will Need:

·         A Parrot/ Bird
·         A Treat e.g Millet ( I use apple but whatever your Parrot likes best)
·         A Parrot Clicker
·         A Training perch (or if your cage opens at the top and you can stick a perch in between, use that)
·         MOTIVATION FOR YOUR PARROT!
INSTRUCTIONS:
Now first your bird should be on the perch. Steps:

1) Make sure your bird is on its perch

2) Hold your Parrots preffered treat behind your hand. Your hand should be not too far away from the Parrots feet

3) Click as soon as he jumps on to your hand

4) Keep on using this method and after he has flied/ jumped onto your hand, on the next turn, move your hand away slightly.

NOW REMEMBER, YOUR PARROT WON`T DO THIS STRAIGHT AWAY! TRY A FEW TIMES AND BE PATIENT. I RECOMMEND THAT 1 HOUR BEFORE TRAINING, YOU TAKE YOUR PARROTS FOOD BOWL OUT OF THE CAGE. THIS IS BECAUSE HE WILL BE HUNGRY AND WILL WORK HARDER TO GET HIS FAVOURITE TREAT.

Training Your Parrot to step up using Target Training

You Will Need
A pet bird (obviously)

1 X Chopstick

A treat e.g. Millet, Apple etc

A parrot training clicker

OR
something which makes a similar sound e.g. An empty stapler.

INSTRUCTIONS

Hold out the chopstick towards your parrot. Just to see what happens after a while your parrot will bite the end of the stick. As soon as he/she does this click with your clicker/stapler and give him a treat.

Do this a couple of times and after a while you can start to move the chopstick further away and you should find that your parrot starts to walk up towards the chopstick and bite it so it can get a treat. If he/she doesn’t walk towards the chopstick then hold the chopstick next to your parrot a few more times.

Now your parrot should be able to walk towards the stick to bite it so it gets a treat.

Next hold out the chopstick just above your arm and your parrot should now hop on to your arm to bite the stick so it can get a treat! Simple!

In fact this can also tie in with flight recall as you may be able to hold the stick and make your parrot fly towards you!

The perfect seed mix

Many parrot owners keep their Parrots on an all pelleted diet simply because "they are healthier than seeds" Although this is healthy, it can be very boring for the Parrot if you do not provide anything else. Pellets are like cereal, how would you like to eat cereal ALL THE TIME? Seeds mixes are not ALL bad because then they would just be pointless. pellets are not bad either, just dont feed them an all pelleted diet. Now im not saying that just feed seeds, heck no im saying the opposite. Seeds can be fed with other healthy items. So what can we do? some of the better quality seed mixes contain a variety of different healthier ingredients and this is equal to pellets. Some of these extra ingredients are: Pellets (they are healthier and your parrot will not get bored of them, because they dont eat that much), dried fruit (papaya, banana, pineapple etc), a wide variety of nuts (not too much because too much nuts can be unhealthy) and other healthier seeds. Dont get me wrong, it does contain sunflower seeds (which are fattening if they are given too much) but they need to have a balanced diet so yes that does mean some sunflower seeds but not all sunflower seeds. Im not saying you have to do this, cos that would be stupid, it is your own choice what you want to feed your Parrot because it is your Parrot. I am just showing my opinion. The seed mix which I recommend is Pets At Home Premium Cockatiel & Lovebird food because it contains all the ingredients which I listed above as healthy (this is what I use for my cockatiel, for larger parrots there is one like this called Premium Parrot mix on the Pets At Home website) but if you dont have that available, just find one with a variety of healthy ingredients and good reviews. Now a good seed mix is not all you need, although there is dried fruit in it you also need to provide fresh fruit and veg every day for your Parrot to keep it healthy.

How to hold your Parrot

HOW TO HOLD YOUR PARROT

There is many different ways on holding your parrot. In this article we plan to show you 3 different ways which we use with our parrots.

Method one – Flat hand : This method is useful if you are beginning to tame your parrot. Hold out a flat hand in front of your parrot, he/she will step on if they are handtame. This method is quick and easy and it is useful when putting your Parrot back in its cage.

Method two – Finger Gun: Hold out your hand. Tuck in all the fingers except your index finger so your hand looks like a finger gun. This method is useful for just holding your parrot on your hand and petting him.

Method 3 – The normal method: This is one of the simplest methods. Simply, hold out your hand and tuck your thumb in (so your Parrot doesn’t fell tempted to bite it). This method is useful for flight recall.

My Cockatiel Injured

Hi guys,

I'm just letting you know that on saturday, Ladu (my cockatiel), flew into a glass roof and some crest feathers fell out. Now, his head has a little scab on it and also a small cut on the top of his beak. It is a small injury but he still needs some rest.Because of this I will be taking him to the avian vet. I informed you on this as we will not be able to do any training videos until his injury has healed. He should be okay soon but the target training video will have to be delayed for now. We will keep you posted on how he is doing.

Hope Ladu gets better soon!

Parrot joke of the month

One day a man went to an auction.
While there, he bid on a parrot.
He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding.
He kept on bidding, but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher.
Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid - the parrot was his at last!
As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the Auctioneer, "I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can't talk!"
"Don't worry." said the Auctioneer, "He can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?

Random Parrot Tips

· Never feed your parrot: Potatoes, Chocolate, Avocado or anything with sugar/salt in it (apart from most fruits)

· Keep an adequate sized cage for your Parrot, enough for him/her to stretch his/her wings and move about

· Parrots don’t usually get along well with dogs and cats, unless your Parrot doesn’t go mad when seeing your dog/cat. If you have both pets, keep your Parrot in a different room

· Don’t step on your Parrot. :P
